Hazen Contributes to AWWA Webinar on U.S. Water Reuse Trends

(TEMPE, AZ – May 21, 2026) – Hazen Senior Principal Engineer Susheera Pochiraju, PhD, PE, recently presented during an American Water Works Association (AWWA) webinar titled, “The Reuse Revolution: What’s Happening in Water Reuse Today.” Joining a panel of fellow industry experts, Susheera discussed the rapid evolution of reuse and advanced water treatment (AWT) programs and the importance of early collaboration with AWT operators and conducting training as vital pillars of successful reuse program implementation and longevity.

An increasing number of utilities across the U.S. are exploring water reuse strategies to expand and diversify their water portfolios—working toward a more resilient water future for their communities. Potable reuse strategies can help water managers address a variety of water challenges, from water scarcity driven by drought and population growth to groundwater and aquifer depletion, saltwater intrusion, a dynamic and evolving regulatory landscape, and much more.

As more water reuse and AWT programs progress, the need for operators well versed in their complexities is also growing. Enhanced monitoring, additional treatment and compliance requirements, shorter response times, and other distinctions make water reuse and AWT facilities more complicated and operationally intensive from traditional drinking water and wastewater treatment plants. This requires that operators gain a new set of skills to master more complex technologies and embrace new ways of thinking and communicating given the multifaceted nature of reuse programs.

During her presentation, Susheera highlighted the importance of aligning reuse and AWT goals and requirements with programs that empower on-the-ground staff and ensure day-to-day operational sustainability. Identifying key components of operator certification programs, she also discussed multiple cities that are taking proactive steps to educate and train future AWT operators. She emphasized that, with comprehensive training and collaboration throughout the lifecycle of reuse programs—from pilots to full-scale implementation—utilities can ensure high-quality drinking water supplies along with the continued protection of public health.
