Hazen PANDA Pilot Featured in Chemical Engineering Journal

(FAIRFAX, VA – September 6, 2024) - Several Hazen experts recently had a paper published in Chemical Engineering Journal about a successful remote pilot of partial denitrification-anammox (PANDA) in the Pacific Northwest.

The paper, titled Carbon-efficient nutrient removal from real municipal wastewater under conditions of highly variable influent quality and low temperature, details a pilot project that integrates four advanced bioprocesses – partial nitrification, endogenous denitrification, PANDA, and enhanced biological phosphorus removal – into one advanced pilot design.

In 212 days of operation, the pilot proved to be a successful alternative to traditional treatment options, using 100% less carbon and 30% less oxygen during secondary treatment. During tertiary treatment, it used up to 50% less carbon compared to a conventional biological nutrient removal setup—demonstrating significant potential savings with lower environmental impacts.

Hazen authors of the article include Jiefu Wang, Yewei Sun, and Wendell Khunjar. The full article is available to Chemical Engineering Journal subscribers on the Science Direct website.
