Emergency Response at Bay Park WWTP
Nine feet of saltwater surged into the plant's basement and sub-basement during Hurricane Sandy, causing major damage.
(NEW YORK, NY - November 6, 2012) - Water and wastewater engineering firm Hazen and Sawyer is aiding recovery efforts to restore full operation to the Bay Park Sewage Treatment Plant in Nassau County, New York. The Long Island plant recently returned to partial operation after nine feet of saltwater surged into its basement and sub-basement during Hurricane Sandy, causing major damage to the plant’s infrastructure.
Last week, the plant - which serves about 550,000 Nassau County residents - was declared a public health emergency. To protect the health of residents, County and State critical response teams relieved sewage pressure valves throughout the Bay Park Sewage Treatment System and secured pumps to divert sewage from backing up into houses and streets.
Massive industrial-sized sewage pumps were delivered to the plant from six states, some from as far away as Virginia. A return to full operation could take up to twelve months.
