Cocoplum 1 Pump Station and Force Main Upgrade Awarded Resilient Project of The Year

The City of Coral Gables approach to the design of PS-CC1, and all subsequent infrastructure improvements, will take into consideration Envision’s holistic framework for evaluating and rating the community, environmental, and economic benefits of this infrastructure project.

(HOLLYWOOD, FL - January 29, 2018) - The City of Coral Gables’ Cocoplum Pump Station and Force Main Upgrade project was awarded the “Resilient Project of the Year” in the Green Utility Category by the Resilient Utility Coalition at their Operationalizing Resilience Summit in Miami on January 26th, 2018.

The project entailed the mechanical, electrical, and structural upgrades of the station and force main to better accommodate peaks flows, and increase system reliability.

The project leveraged the framework of the Envision Sustainable Infrastructure Rating System during planning and design to better incorporate elements of community, environmental, and economic benefits. These criteria address a project’s impact on the surrounding community and environment, technical considerations regarding materials and processes, and other critical choices spanning the project’s lifecycle. The implementation of innovative materials, reuse of in situ excavated materials, resiliency consideration to assure operation under adverse conditions as well as improvements to the existing community in the forms of a proposed park and pedestrian walkways have been incorporated into the design.

Hazen and Sawyer is the engineer of record for this pump station and force main upgrade project, and led Envision planning and design workshops in both the conceptual and detailed designed phases. The City of Coral Gables is demonstrating early alignment with regional use of Envision for the planning and design of water infrastructure.
