Kim Sturgess to Serve as Special Advisor at Hazen

(CALGARY, AB – March 31, 2026) – WaterSMART, a Hazen Company, has announced that effective April 1st, founder Kim Sturgess will now serve as a Special Advisor at Hazen to continue her project work and support water management efforts across Alberta.

An expert in watershed management and policy, Kim has successfully led WaterSMART since its inception in 2005. Under Kim’s leadership, WaterSMART became the go-to consultant for vital water modeling initiatives throughout Western Canada. She is also the founder of the Alberta WaterPortal Society, which provides education on key water issues in the province and around the world.

Over the course of her storied career, Kim has been recognized with the YWCA Women of Distinction award, the Global Woman of Vision award, the Distinguished Service Award and the Alumni Achievement Award from Queen’s University, the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Medal, and the Alberta Centennial Medal. In 2015, she was awarded the Order of Canada for her outstanding achievements, dedication to community, and service to the nation.

“We are so thankful to Kim for her partnership over the years, particularly over the last year as WaterSMART has become part of Hazen,” said Alan Stone, Hazen President. “Kim’s vision and dedication to water security throughout Canada and the world is unparalleled, and we are grateful that she will stay with Hazen as a Special Advisor.”

“Kim is a pioneer in holistic, sustainable water management, recognizing the important role it plays in public health from her earliest days in the industry. She has been an exceptional mentor, and I appreciate her guidance as we joined forces with Hazen,” added Claire Jackson, who has assumed the leadership role at WaterSMART. “We can build upon the foundation she laid, further integrating WaterSMART’s planning expertise with Hazen’s industry-leading design and project delivery capabilities to serve clients across Canada.”
