Pulp and Paper
Despite the dawning of the electronic age, the demand for pulp and paper products continues to grow. The resulting elevation in processing activities makes the need for effective effluent management greater than ever.
Our founder, Richard Hazen, actually began his career as an engineer for the West Virginia Pulp and Paper Company (now Mead Westvaco) more than 60 years ago. The firm designed the original wastewater treatment facility at the Augusta (GA) Mill for Continental Can in 1958 – this facility still operates today. Since then, we have continued to perform water and wastewater treatment related assignments for several large producers of pulp and paper including Mead Westvaco, Smurfit Stone, Kimberly-Clark, and Buckeye L.P.
Efficiently reducing biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and total suspended solids (TSS) present in pulp and paper processing effluents requires assessment of current and potential flows, characterization of raw water and wastewater streams, process modeling to predict performance of different alternatives, and evaluation of risk and reliability for each viable strategy. Our advanced understanding of available technologies also allows us to optimize a process to accommodate any potential space constraints on your site.
Dewatered solids have substantial energy content and may be reused in a boiler to recover energy and reduce sludge disposal cost. We can perform evaluations of this and other renewable energy and waste-to-energy alternatives to minimize your operating costs, while providing reliable compliance with NPDES permits or TMDL requirements. We can also assist you in evaluating waste reduction within the mills to reduce loadings to the treatment units.
Food processors often struggle with meeting stringent limits for phosphorus, ammonia, TSS, BOD, and total dissolved solids. Hazen and Sawyer has helped dozens of these companies achieve compliance with their NPDES permits and newly-developed TMDL requirements, occasionally identifying creative means of compliance when on-site upgrades prove cost-prohibitive.
For one client, a new TMDL for phosphorus threatened the future of a company that discharged into a watershed basin severely impaired by non-point sources. Working with the state EPA and others, we helped this client establish a nutrient trading program in which it worked with local farmers to develop riparian buffers and fences, along with other best management practices, to control run-off from feedlots. The trading program gave the company an attainable “calculated” source discharge that helped achieve regulatory compliance. The trading program has been nationally recognized and is being used as a model to create other similar programs across the country.
For more of our clients, we evaluate their existing treatment plant, determine the necessary improvements to achieve regulatory compliance through process modeling, design the improvements, and provide construction phase services.
Typical upgrades also include anaerobic system improvements to enable or enhance the harvesting of biogas for energy production and conversion of sludge to marketable fertilizer. We’ve recently completed two biomass-to-energy projects for industrial cheese-making clients, also assisting with securing biogas-to-energy grants for these projects. Traditionally or creatively, Hazen and Sawyer can provide cost-effective solutions to process wastewater treatment and discharge, enabling food producers to manage costs, increase production, and remain competitive in their market.
