Wilders Grove Solid Waste Facility Receives Institutional Innovation Award

(RALEIGH, NC – May 6, 2013) – The City of Raleigh Solid Waste Services Facility at Wilders Grove, the nation’s first integrated solid waste facility, received the Institutional Innovation Award at the 2013 City of Raleigh Environmental Awards.

The 27-acre Wilders Grove Solid Waste Service Center consists of a 24,000-sf administration building designed to accommodate up to 300 employees, a vehicle wash facility, a vehicle fueling center and parking for nearly 200 collection and support vehicles.

The facility, which was designed by Hazen and Sawyer and completed in March 2012, is expected to receive LEED Platinum certification. It reduces energy consumption by more than 40 percent using renewable geothermal energy, LED lighting, solar photo voltaic panels and a web-based building control system. Recycled building materials were incorporated throughout construction of the facility and nearly 95 percent of construction waste was diverted from landfills.

Since our founding in 1951, Hazen and Sawyer has focused on two things: providing safe drinking water and controlling water pollution. Our range of services encompasses the planning, design, and construction management of water and wastewater-related projects – from clean water treatment, storage, and distribution to wastewater and stormwater collection, treatment, and reuse.
