New SCADA System for Town of Cary, NC
(RALEIGH, NC – February 7, 2011) – The Town of Cary, NC has selected Hazen and Sawyer to design a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system covering the remote pumping stations in their wastewater collection system.
The new SCADA system will be non-proprietary and expandable, providing enhanced monitoring and control of each station. Operator access to the SCADA system will be provided at Town wastewater treatment facilities, administrative facilities, and selected pumping facilities. Both physical and cyber security will be incorporated into the design, including video surveillance.
The initial phase of the project involves upgrading the existing SCADA equipment at the Town’s eight most critical pumping stations. As budget and needs dictate, the Town may extend the recommended upgrades to additional stations. To provide commonality of equipment, the new SCADA system will follow design standards for the new Western Wake Regional Wastewater Management Facilities, which the Town of Cary will be primarily responsible for operating.
Hazen and Sawyer’s previous work for the Town of Cary has included numerous projects at their water and wastewater treatment plants, and in the collection and distribution systems.
Past SCADA projects include:
Billing Meter SCADA System – Design and construction services for a SCADA system for monitoring flow meters used for billing water sales to the neighboring Town of Morrisville, monitoring and control of a booster pumping station connecting Cary with neighboring Durham, and control of a new flow control valve designed to better supply water to the neighboring Town of Apex.
Water Tank SCADA System – Design and construction services for a SCADA system to incorporate the Town’s water tanks into a comprehensive, reliable system. The project also included monitoring and control of PRV stations and was incorporated into the control system at the Cary-Apex Water Treatment Facility.
