Award-Winning Stormwater Design

The design for the Shields Lake site includes several green infrastructure elements, including porous pavement and dry swales.

The Carillon Parking Lot design includes a bioretention cell to help capture and treat stormwater runoff at the site, a grass filter strip to pretreat runoff prior to entering the bioretention cell, and a 6-inch underdrain to route treated stormwater to the existing piped drainage network.

(RICHMOND VA – November 3, 2014) – Hazen and Sawyer, along with our partners Community Planning Partners, Inc. and The Haskell Company, recently won first place in The James River Association (JRA) Smart Stormwater Design Competition based in Richmond, Virginia.

The competition focused on redeveloping two sites in the City of Richmond’s Byrd Park into community centerpieces by employing river-friendly design techniques. This contest not only spurred the creativity of the design community, but also simultaneously educated the Richmond community on stormwater management and brought these populations together to support the City of Richmond, smart stormwater solutions, and the James River.

The cash award for winning the competition was donated back to the James River Association for the implementation and construction of one of our award-winning stormwater designs. Hazen and Sawyer, Community Planning Partners, Inc., and The Haskell Company are proud to support the City of Richmond and The James River Association through continuing collaborative efforts.
