Resource economics is a specialty science that addresses the way we allocate our natural resources. Using resource economics, Hazen and Sawyer professionals can examine the commercial, recreational and aesthetic values of a resource and the full benefits and costs of resource development or management programs.
Some values of a resource, such as aesthetics and wildlife habitat, may not be as directly observable or as easily measured as other resource values, but they are nevertheless real and economically important. Hazen and Sawyer resource economists have developed time-tested tools to estimate these values so that “apples-to-apples” comparisons of projects can be made.
Hazen and Sawyer’s Resource Economics Group provides professional services in economics and financial analysis, with special expertise in the economics of water and related natural resources. Primary activities focus on providing assistance to public and private entities in resolving complex policy issues of sustaining both natural resources and economic growth. Our Resource Economics Group has established a reputation for quality, thoroughness and responsiveness to client priorities.
Group members hold doctoral or masters degrees in natural resource and/or agricultural economics from universities with outstanding programs in the field. The Group offers knowledge of natural resource characteristics and expertise in the application of economic and financial tools; formulates relevant analytical tools for individual client issues and concerns; and applies a project performance standard designed to withstand legal challenge.
Hazen and Sawyer’s Resource Economics Group offers broad professional experience, from complex studies requiring teams of professionals, to short-duration independent reviews. We have performed sophisticated economic impact analyses of government regulations and programs related to water, wastewater, stormwater, agriculture and community development, many of which were mandated by federal and state authorities.
Most of our studies include surveys of beneficiaries and the regulated community. Hazen and Sawyer also performs rate studies for water supply, water reuse, stormwater and solid waste utilities and funding analyses of environmental programs.
