Detailed Sampling for Process Modeling: Common Pitfalls and Lessons Learned

Biological process models, created using simulation software packages such as Biowin from Envirosim and GPS-X from Hydromantis, are increasingly important tools in the wastewater industry for the evaluation, design, and operation of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). The effectiveness of the models are highly dependent on the degree of calibration, which in turn depends on the amount of data available and the quality therewith. Often, it is necessary to perform additional sampling to gather sufficient data for model calibration. This detailed sampling is often costly, but is critical to a successful project.
It is important that the proper planning and coordination be done in advance to ensure all the necessary information is collected in a cost effective manner. Well executed sampling events can capture previously unquantified process features that help explain deficiencies, upsets, or failures. This paper will provide general guidelines for planning and implementing a successful sampling event and address several common issues pertaining to sample collection and analysis. Case studies will also be provided to demonstrate these principles and lessons learned.
