Challenges in Meeting Stage 2 DBP Rules when Source Water Bromide Changes - A Tale of Two Cities

Authors:

  • Allison Reinert and David Briley - Hazen and Sawyer

With recent rises in bromide concentrations in source waters, compliance with the Stage 2 DBP Rule has been a particular challenge for two case study sites in North Carolina. These vastly different plants have been affected with heavily brominated THM species from various bromide sources including power plant scrubber blow down. With bromide skewing traditional DBP speciation and concentrations, several treatment solutions were evaluated for the two different water treatment plants.

This presentation will focus on two case studies and will detail the solutions explored for each facility.
