A Cost-Benefit Analysis of the Energy Requirements for Trace Contaminant Removal in Reuse Systems

The WateReuse Research Foundation project 08-05 (“Use of Ozone in Water Reclamation for Contaminant Oxidation”) was completed in February, 2012 and was designed to examine the impact of ozone and other oxidation/treatment processes on trace organic contaminant removal in water reuse applications. The larger study, led by Dr. Shane Snyder at the University of Arizona, focused on examining the impact of ozone on trace organic contaminants in wastewaters from around the world.

As part of that study, the Hazen and Sawyer – Kennedy/Jenks team developed cost curves and treatment scenarios for various processes including microfiltration (MF), ozone, biological granular active carbon (BAC), reverse osmosis membranes (RO), and ultraviolet light with advanced oxidation (UV/AOP). The combined set of cost curves was designed to allow utilities to piece together hypothetical treatment trains (e.g., MF-Ozone-BAC or MF-RO-UV/AOP) and compare capital and operation & maintenance costs, all within the context of trace organic contaminant removal.

This presentation will provide an overview of the project findings, will compare potential cost scenarios of various treatment trains, and will provide instruction on how utilities can use the findings from the study to develop their own scenarios specific to their wastewater treatment and water reclamation needs.
