Hazen and Sawyer Wins ACEC-NC Honors Award

New Pumping Station Helps Resolve Greensboro Sewer Overflows

(RALEIGH, NC – April 10, 2009) – The North Carolina chapter of the American Council of Engineering Companies awarded Hazen and Sawyer and ARCADIS their Honors Award for the successful completion of the City of Greensboro’s $45 million North Buffalo Creek Sanitary Sewer Replacement Project.

Located in the heart of Greensboro, Latham Park is a historic, upscale residential neighborhood and home to residences, businesses, public parks, and major thoroughfares. In September 2003, approximately 40,000 gallons overflowed from the sewer into the park area due to heavy rains, posing a serious health risk to residents. In cooperation with the North Carolina Division of Water Quality, the City developed a plan for proactively addressing these issues, which included replacing the existing North Buffalo Creek Sanitary Sewer Outfall and constructing the new 80-mgd North Buffalo Transfer Pumping Station and associated force main.

Together, Hazen and Sawyer and ARCADIS worked with the City to cost-effectively resolve these sewer overflow issues five months ahead of schedule. Hazen and Sawyer provided design and construction administration services for the new 80-mgd North Buffalo Transfer Pumping Station and 4.6 miles of 48″ to 54″ sewer force main between the North Buffalo Creek and T.Z. Osborne Water Reclamation Facilities.

In August 2008, a 10-year storm event occurred in Greensboro and the system operated as planned—there were no recorded sewer overflows in Latham Park. This project provides a road map for large-scale, complex sewer system renewal in a highly congested urban setting.

For more than half a century, Hazen and Sawyer has focused on two things: providing safe drinking water and controlling water pollution. Our range of services encompasses the planning, design, and construction management of water and wastewater-related projects – from clean water treatment, storage, and distribution to wastewater collection and treatment. Since our founding in 1951, we have grown in size to over 740 employees in 26 offices.
