Water Treatment Facility Upgrades, Transmission Mains Assessment for City of Fayetteville

(RALEIGH, NC – March 4, 2011) – The City of Fayetteville (NC) has recently selected Hazen and Sawyer to provide preliminary engineering design, design, and construction administration services for upgrades at the P.O. Hoffer Water Treatment Facility(WTF) and Glenville Lake WTF, in addition to a condition assessment of the transmission mains in the City’s distribution system.

In assessing the condition of the transmission mains, Hazen and Sawyer will work with City’s water treatment facility operators and distribution system staff to:

  • Review all construction record drawings to identify all transmission mains (piping routes, profiles, dimensions, specifications and laying schedule) at both P.O. Hoffer WTF and Glenville Lake WTF
  • Identify the materials of construction of transmission mains
  • Identify all valves for isolating any transmission mains without interrupting the treatment plant and finished water pump station operation
  • Locate access tees and measure their dimensions for possible monitoring equipment access
  • Locate drains on the transmission mains for possible dewatering and depressurizing for testing
  • Discuss with specialty pipeline test consultants to recommend the most cost-effective testing method
  • Coordinate test schedule with the City’s operators to avoid treatment plant and pump station shut-downs
  • Prioritize transmission main repair and replacement based on test results
  • Incorporate repair and replacement of transmission mains with plant upgrade
  • Develop long-term condition assessment plans for transmission mains in water distribution system

Included in the upgrade of the P.O. Hoffer Water Treatment Facility and Glenville Lake WTF is addition of a 12-mg clearwell, chemical conveying system, and sodium hypochlorite storage tanks and coagulant tanks.

Since our founding in 1951, Hazen and Sawyer has focused on two things: providing safe drinking water and controlling water pollution.
