Relocating Key Infrastructure in the Port of Miami

Hazen and Sawyer Helping Miami-Dade County Prepare for Deep Dredge

(MIAMI, Florida – September 16, 2011) – The Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department (MDWASD) is partnering with Ric-Man Construction and Hazen and Sawyer to replace existing water and sewer mains under the area of the Port of Miami. The impetus for this project is the deepening of the Panama Canal, which will ultimately result in larger, “New Panamax” ships engaged in commerce, hence requiring deeper ports. The Port of Miami is the only port south of Norfolk, Va., capable of being deep-dredged by 2014 and one of only three East Coast ports fully authorized by Congress to do so.

The project consists of the fast tracked design-build of a 100’ deep and 1,500’ long 24” diameter Horizontal Direction Drill from the Port of Miami to Fisher Island to replace an existing 20” water main and a 72” diameter micro-tunnel from Fisher Island to an in-water shaft south of Miami Beach. The 1,100’, 72” micro-tunnel, installed at a depth of (-) 80 feet, will carry a new 54” diameter sewage force main, replacing the existing force main which transmits wastewater from Miami Beach, Surfside and Bal Harbor to the County’s Central District Wastewater Treatment Plant on Virginia Key.

Being such an important part of the economy of Miami-Dade County and because of the sensitive nature of Biscayne Bay, MDWASD chose the Ric-Man Hazen and Sawyer Team for its extensive experience and expertise on large diameter pipeline projects in Biscayne Bay and deep shaft work.

Ric-Man Construction will lead the construction team while Hazen and Sawyer will lead the design team comprised of nine firms for the complex project. Hazen and Sawyer has served the Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department since early 1970’s including multiple water and sewer projects. This will be the largest Design/Build undertaken by MDWASD to date.

MDWASD provides service to more than 2.4 million customers. Approximately 347 million gallons of water are drawn everyday from the Biscayne Aquifer for consumer use. MDWASD has six regional water and wastewater treatment facilities and over 7, 100 miles of water lines and 3,600 miles of sewage pipes.
