Operational Peak Flow Enhancements for the Western Virginia Water Authority

(RALEIGH, NC – February 9, 2011) – The Western Virginia Water Authority has selected Hazen and Sawyer to render final design, construction phase and start-up services in connection with the proposed upgrade to the 55-mgd Roanoke Regional Water Pollution Control Plant. The project is titled “Operational Peak Flow Enhancements – Chlorine Contact Basin and Biological Aerated Filter Optimization.”

Process evaluations will include a sampling program, calibration, and application of a BioWin model to evaluate wet weather performance, CFD modeling of existing secondary clarifiers, and pilot testing and media selection for replacement media in the existing biological aerated filters. Detailed design is anticipated to include wet weather step feed modifications to the activated sludge process, biological aerated filter modifications, and significant expansion to the existing disinfection facilities to treat peak flows of up to 200 mgd.

Hazen and Sawyer has completed multiple upgrade projects for the Authority over the past decade including design of their 200 mgd influent pumping and headworks facilities, conversion of their activated sludge process from two-stage to single stage, and other plant-wide treatment enhancements.
