Leadership in Resource Recovery Research

(NEW YORK – April 11, 2014) – Hazen and Sawyer was recently awarded two new projects and one extended project from the Water Environment Research Foundation (WERF).

Hazen and Sawyer was selected to lead research efforts into Recovering Carbon and Other Commodity Products from Wastewater (NTRY3R13). In this project, the firm, in collaboration with Bucknell University and CH2M HILL, will perform a detailed evaluation of technologies available for recovering commodities from wastewater and perform a market analyses for each of the products. This research will provide utilities and other stakeholders with a knowledge base for understanding the opportunities that exist for pursuing resource recovery of carbon and other commodities.

The firm was also selected to help lead research efforts into developing A Multi-Platform Approach to Recovering High Value Carbon Products From Wastestreams (NTRY4R13). In this project, Hazen and Sawyer and its partners will evaluate and demonstrate technologies that can be used to produce biofuels, lipids, and bioplastic pre-cursors. Hazen and Sawyer and its partners will also extend the Tool for Evaluating Resource Recovery (TERRY) to include technological and economic considerations for implementing these innovative carbon recovery options in existing water resource reclamations facilities.

The extension of WERF NTRY1R12 (Towards a Renewable Future: Assessing Resource Recovery as a Viable Treatment Alternative) includes additional funding to allow Hazen and Sawyer, in collaboration with the University of Queensland, Australia and CH2MHILL to oversee research into emerging resource recovery technologies, including electrodialysis and struvite harvesting technologies.
