Greensboro Chooses Hazen and Sawyer to Help Add Pumping Capacity

Additional Water Booster Station Will Address Growing Demands

(Charlotte, NC – May 27, 2009) – The City of Greensboro, North Carolina, has selected Hazen and Sawyer to provide Design and Construction Phase Services for a New Water Booster Station to increase capacity to better meet present and future water demands.

Hazen and Sawyer has been providing the City with Water Distribution System Master Planning services since 2008 and identified a critical need to add pumping capacity to the water distribution system. Due to a roadway widening project, the City lost a booster pumping station that served a significant portion of the City’s population as well as important commercial and industrial users. While the City has been relying on another pump station for the past several years to serve the demand for water, pumping capacity must be added to reliably meet existing and future demands. The roadway widening project prevents reconstruction of the pump station in the previous location.

The City owns a property that was recently improved to include a new baseball diamond, fencing, and lighting. Hazen and Sawyer developed concept plans for a new pump station that would be located on this property, which will include restroom facilities and a concession stand that can be used during baseball games. This win-win approach for the City’s Water Resources Department and the Parks and Recreation Department will allow for up to 9 MGD of finished water to be pumped into the target zones, restoring the firm capacity and providing for future demand. The pump station is also situated to receive water from a new regional water treatment plant scheduled to be brought on-line in 2011.

The City’s Parks and Recreation Department will benefit from improved facilities that the public can enjoy during baseball games. While still in the preliminary design phase, the project will require the addition of landscaping features and approval of the other City departments prior to construction. The field hosts Greensboro’s Challenger Baseball League, which holds baseball games for adults and children with a wide range of disabilities in the spring and fall.
