The Hazen-Adams model allows utilities to estimate the amount of cyanotoxins that will be removed during oxidation by ozone, permanganate, chlorine, chlorine dioxide, or chloramine at their facility.

(RALEIGH, NC – August 25, 2016) – Hazen and Sawyer’s Director of Applied Research Ben Stanford and Director of Drinking Water Process Technology Erik Rosenfeldt are featured in new videos from Water Research Foundation about cyanotoxins and harmful algal blooms.

Cyanobacteria and their pervasiveness in recreational and drinking water sources are a significant challenge for water utilities worldwide. The first video provides information on the science behind cyanobacteria and cyanotoxins and a utility perspective on the latest in source water protection, monitoring, detection, and treatment. Experts from Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, SUEZ, City of Alliance (OH), and Hazen and Sawyer share the knowledge they’ve gained in managing cyanobacteria and cyanotoxins.

The second video is an Expert Symposium related to WRF project #4657, “Cyanobacterial Blooms and Cyanotoxins: Knowledge Synthesis, Utility Workshop and Research Gaps.” This workshop was conducted June 7–8, 2016, at the University of Colorado Boulder. Topics of discussion included analytical methods, occurrence and monitoring, oxidation treatment, and general treatment. The workshop findings will be used to craft a multi-year research agenda for WRF’s Focus Area, entitled “Cyanobacterial Blooms and Cyanotoxins: Monitoring, Control, and Communication Strategies.”
