(RALEIGH, NC – July 8, 2010) – The City of Goldsboro, NC, has retained Hazen and Sawyer for engineering services on several projects. Hazen and Sawyer was awarded Construction Administration and Inspection Services for the Phase 1 WTP improvements project, which includes rehabilitation and repairs to the 12-mgd WTP, which was originally constructed in 1951.

Hazen and Sawyer has also been retained to assist the City with improvements to its existing raw water supply intake on the Neuse River. The City has experienced many challenges with its existing intake, including limited water depth at low river flows, sedimentation of the existing wedgewire screen, and algae growth on the screen. These factors significantly affect the City’s ability to withdraw sufficient raw water to meet its customers’ needs. In consultation with Dr. Jacob Odgaard of the University of Iowa, Hazen and Sawyer is evaluating riverbed stability near the existing intake as well as sediment exclusion strategies. The results of these analyses will help Hazen and Sawyer develop a conceptual design for a new water supply intake on the Neuse River.
